Portrait Photography

Thank you for your interest in my Portrait Photography services. Portrait Photography should be more than taking pictures of you; it should be creating photographs about you. Specializing in location photography, I create photographs in locations that have meaning to the subject… and to the eventual viewer of the photographs.

Realizing that Portrait Photography is a personal choice and can raise many questions and concerns, some of the more common questions are addressed below. But I want to address all of your questions, so please contact me. I want to help you make this as special as you deserve it to be.

Frequently asked questions…

I’m nervous enough about having my picture taken; is that going to ruin the photos?
Thumbnail Many people can be, at least initially, uncomfortable in front of the camera; it’s 100% normal. But my experience has shown that my professionalism will guide you through the process. Plus working in a familiar environment (rather than an unfamiliar studio) can help put you at ease.

Why don’t you use a studio?
I want to create photographs about you — and a studio has nothing to do with you. Typically I’ll work in a client’s home but I’ve worked in other locations as well; one client had me photograph her on the deck of her boat and another at a restaurant where she worked as a waitress. And a familiar location can help make you feel at ease in front of the camera. Of course, if you’d prefer a studio, I can arrange for that as well.

How long will the photography take?
Prior to the actual session, preparation may take about an hour — your wardrobe & makeup, setting up my photographic equipment, etc. Once we start the actual photography, it depends primarily upon your comfort level in front of the camera. I’ve had sessions that last an hour and I’ve had sessions go as quickly as 15 minutes. A few minutes after the photography, we will go through the images so that you can start making your choices for your final prints. As a general guideline, from start to finish, it would be safe to devote two hours to a “one hour” photo session.

What about wardrobe and hair & makeup?
Wardrobe is usually left up to you. If you would like, I can offer suggestions. Some clients have brought several different outfits to a session and, together, we decided on which one would work best. But because there are as many ideas and as there are people, it would be a practical impossibility for me to supply the wardrobe.
I also leave hair and makeup to you. Again, if you need suggestions, I can help you with what works best in front of the camera and what works best for a particular outfit. Also, stylists may be hired at additional cost.

Do you provide photo retouching?
Thumbnail Basic retouching on any ordered prints is included with your photo session fee. Typical retouching includes acne or scar removal. More advanced retouching and photo manipulation will be quoted on an individual basis. Examples of the different levels of retouching are available here.
Retouching is not provided on images for the post-session review, on the CD-ROM. However, I can show you quick examples of the kind of retouching I can do on your photographs during the post-session review so that you’ll have an idea of what to expect.

Are my photographs going to end up on this website?
No! Nor will I sell them to another website, magazine, or any other kind of publishing. Your privacy and your trust are both very important to me and your photos will never be published without your specific permission.

What will this cost?
The costs will range depending upon how much you want to have done. While I prefer to work out personalized pricing for each client, I recognize that my package pricing can help guide you. For more specific information, I encourage you to contact me and we can discuss your options. And don’t forget to ask if I’m running any current specials.

Can I purchase a photography package as a gift for someone else?
A photo session and prints can be a wonderful gift for someone. The only caveat I offer is that the session itself should not be a surprise.
For more specific information, I encourage you to contact me and we can discuss your options. And don’t forget to ask if I’m running any current specials.

How long will it be before I see finished prints?
Thumbnail In most cases, a few minutes (that’s right — “minutes”) after the session, I’ll show you proof images from your session on a computer screen. If you would like, I can make suggestions as to what I think works best but all final decisions will, of course, be up to you. You can even make the decision as to which images you want to have printed right then and there. If, however, you need a little more time to decide, then within a week or so, your images will be available for you to review at your leisure CD-ROM. Either way, after you’ve viewed your proofs, tell me which images you want printed. Then, about two weeks later, you’ll have finished prints.

How do I get the process started?
Contact me (call, e-mail, write, carrier pigeon, whatever!). I’ll discuss the specifics of what you would like me to do for you. Tell me what you have in mind. And I’ll work with you from the beginning to the end. My job is to take that picture in your head and turn it into a photograph on paper.
